| | DNS - Domain Name Service. This is a directory listing that all of the other servers on the web use to find your web site. A system to match common names (www.yoursite.com) to the IP address(es) that are associated with that common name. |

| | Domain Name - Your web site address. (ex. www.yoursite.com) |

| | DPI - Dots Per Inch. A printing term that determines how sharp a picture is. On the web, we use pixels instead of dots, but DPI is still used to refer to the resolution of an image. The higher the DPI, the sharper and larger the image is. |

| | Graphics - Images. Anything on your site that isn't text, video or audio. |

| | Graphics Editor - A program like Photoshop that is used to create or alter images. |

| | IP Address - Internet Protocol Address. A series of numbers separated by "."'s. the IP address is the thing that the web actually recognizes as your site. You have two of these. One is assigned by your registration company and it is that IP address that links you to the web. The other is assigned by your hosting company. They have to tell this second address to resolve to the registration address. (ex. 55.55.555.5) |

| | ISP - Internet Service Provider. Your link to the web. Wether you use a dial-up service like AOL, or have a broadband link, someone has to know who you are and where to find you. Your ISP performs that service. |

| | Keywords - Words and phrases that can be used to refer to your web site and its content. Keywords are used by search engines to help determine how relevant your site is to a person searching for something. |
| | Organic Search - The list of search results presented by a search engine that are not paid advertising. |

| | PDF - Portable Document Format. A file format created by Adobe and readable by Adobe Acrobat. It is for desktop publishing. |

| | PSD - PhotoShop Document. An image saved in the format used by Adobe Photoshop. |

| | Resolution - The crispness of an image or how large an image can get before it looks blurry. |

| | Root Server - The central location to which all domain names and IP addresses refer. Network Solutions owns the root server. |

| | SMTP - Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. Email. This is method the servers use to deliver email. An SMTP server is the place that knows your email address and can rout your messages to you or hold them until you log in to pick them up. |

| | TIF, GIF, JPG - File extensions for images. Gif and jpg are more for the web and tif is used for print. |

| | URL - Uniform Resource Locator. Your domain name or the IP address assigned to it. (ex. www.yoursite.com or 55.55.555.5) |

| | Web Designer - Web Artist. Designers are website graphics gurus. They can design a look and feel for your site. Some of them can program it for you, but some hand that task off to a developer. |

| | Web Developer - A person who can program a web site. Some developers offer design services and editing services in addition to programming. Developers often work with designers. |

| | Web Editor - A professional who makes sure you've said what you mean and that you did it with proper grammar. Some designers and developers offer web editing services. |

| | Web Host - Physical location of your web site data. |
